GoMA

Our class decided to take a trip down to the galley of modern art to visit the You, Me, Something Else exhibit. Unfortunately i don’t enjoy conceptual or modern art as much as traditional, i was far more interested in the building that housed these ‘sculptures’ than the pieces themselves. I know i cant disregard anything called conceptual or modern, i just feel my opinion of what art it is far from these ideas, although i love understanding the process behind an artwork, i don’t neccessarily want the process to overtake the final product. People who can not lay a finger on their sculpture until positioning it in the gallery, being constructed by dozens of other people, but it was their idea… I know someone could relate this to architects who, mostly, don’t get completely hands on with every part of the construction process, but had the concept, and i do know that the majority of the artist exhibiting probably have fine art and sculpture degrees themselves. Its just when i see these galleries and people walking round them, almost reading their own interpretation into the piece, sometimes when its not neccessarily there, it annoys me as i prefer seeing something that you know must have taken countless hours and a great amount of skill, but i have come to appreciate the conceptual as it challenges our ideas of art, it sparked this reaction in me, made me think about what i value in visual representation
